Government Rebates to Protect Your Home from Water Damage
Many homeowners can receive significant financial assistance for upgrades that prevent basement floods, up to $6,650 in total subsidies (as of the City’s May 1, 2026 program expansion, for eligible work completed on or after November 12, 2025), through the City of Toronto’s Basement Flooding Protection Subsidy Program. A sizable amount of your expenses may be recovered, depending on the nature of the work. The primary upgrades that are eligible are listed below, along with the highest possible rebate amounts.
Sump Pump Upgrades and Backup Systems
Sump pumps that are installed professionally lower the chance of flooding by keeping water away from your foundation. Homeowners can get up to $2,250 through the rebate program for sump pump replacements or new pumps (one device), plus an additional up to $300 for a battery backup.
Foundation Drain (Weeping Tile) Severance and Capping
During storms, basement flooding may occur if the foundation drain is connected to the municipal sewer system. The City provides rebates of up to $400 for correctly disconnecting and capping these drains.
Backwater Valve Installation
To prevent sewage from backing up into your basement during strong storms, install a backwater valve. For the installation or replacement of a backwater valve, including alarm systems, the City will reimburse up to $1,600 per device (maximum two devices).
